Rohit Sharma's ODI future seems to be under the clouds after the recent comments made by the BCCI official. Having retired from Test and T20I cricket, Rohit will only play ODI cricket where he is the captain.
Previously, both Rohit and Virat had made their intentions clear about playing the ODI World Cup 2027. India lost the ODI World Cup 2023 final to Australia at home and thus both Kohli and Rohit are keen on winning an ODI World Cup before retiring.
Rohit Sharma Was Expected To Retire After CT Title Win
Rohit would turn 40 by the time the ODI World Cup happens in 2027. Kohli would also turn 39. Rohit had quashed retirement rumours after leading India to the ICC Champions Trophy title win earlier this year.
"I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure there are no rumours spread moving forward. Thank you so much," Rohit had stated.
Meanwhile, according to the latest reports backed by recent comments from a BCCI official, Rohit Sharma was expected to retire from ODI cricket after India's Champions Trophy title win. However, him still deciding to continue has created a bit of confusion among the selectors, it seems.
"Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," said a BCCI source, as per a report by Hindustan Times.
With Shubman Gill's announcement as the next India Test captain, it was a clear indication from the selectors that they are looking to take the team towards a new direction. As far as the ODI captaincy is concerned, Shreyas Iyer after his recent heroics in the IPL has come out as a prime contender for ODI captaincy. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are also among the possible options.
